“Me as Mona Lisa” continues this conversation of authorship and challenging once held beliefs. “Me as Mona Lisa” is a metaphor that parallel women’s history, as the most controversial, viewed, valued, and reproduced art works of all time, including the debate about whether she is a feminist, and her facial expression, as many try to determine if she happy or sad.
The objects in this piece are extracted from found family photographs. The flowerpot, figurative sculpture, and shade-less lamp, are all items that belonged to my late grandmother, the Matriarch of the family. I never got a chance to meet her due to her passing soon after she was diagnosed with cancer. I have only ever been able gaze at her images and imagine/reimagine the kind of women she was and could have continued been.
